The inter-relationship of the historic and the dramatically new in this project has forged a unique union, setting the scene for an exciting, creative partnership with artists and architects. Few hotels invite artists to interpret the notions of hospitality, accommodation, itinerancy or travel – the basic characteristics of a hotel. Fewer still consider the potential for artists and designers to interpret the history of a hotelʼs buildings, site, locale or previous functions. Despite two decades of neglect, the Hunter Street site and its buildings were rich with the remnants of past industry and development.

The materials from which the buildings were constructed offer a wonderful array of textures, colours and wear and tear that is visually interesting, and MN+A orchestrated the involvement of artists to assist in bringing their vision into reality. Art and design have been incorporated into the fabric of the Hotel, as well as furniture and works on walls. The Hotel has already attracted avid art-lovers from all corners of the globe, and acclaim from some of the world's leading newspapers and travel journals.
