ixl atrium 2004
Hunter Street, Sullivans Cove, Hobart, Tasmania
The atrium is the new centrepiece of
the IXL Development; a glass covered toroidal shaped roof covering a open
plaza, which is now a flexible multiarts
venue, hosting a wide variety of
arts related and corporate events.
The idea which underpinned our
creative thinking was the desire
to create long term sustainable
environmental design solutions,
utilising the thermal properties if the
historic warehouses. The atrium does
this by providing fresh tempered air
to passively warm the entire interiors
of the warehouses. Fresh air, heated
by the Greenhouse Effect created by
sunlight passing through the glass
roof, is linked in together with the high
thermal mass of the old brick and
sandstone buildings.

This is cutting edge environmental
design, and the lintegration of passively heated air, sophisticated air
flow monitoring techniques and
the innate thermal properties of the
historic urban fabric, is truly unique.
The atrium space is intended to be used as an all seasons public plaza
with a special emphasis being on creating a new venue for the performing
and visual arts. To date, the IXL Atrium has been utilised by 10 Days on
the Island, Arts Tasmania, Young Designers Month and the School of Art.
